
Biography of Petros Magoulas
Petros Magoulas is an opera singer (bass), born in Athens, Greece. Ηe studied singing & opera performance with Frangiscos Voutsinos and Kostas Paskalis, along with his studies in advanced theory of music. He has performed in many opera productions at the Greek National Opera, Kiel Opera, Opera of Bilbao (ABAO), Welsh National Opera, Athens Epidaurus Festival, Athens Megaron, Thessaloniki Concert Hall, Opera of Thessaloniki and Opera Festival of Ancient Corinth. From 2010 to 2013 he was a member of the ensemble of the Kiel Opera. As of 2014 he is at present a member of the ensemble of the Greek National Opera. During the last few seasons he sang leading roles such as Sarastro (The Magic Flute, Mozart), Osmin (The Abduction from the Seraglio, Mozart), Don Giovanni (Don Giovanni, Mozart), Don Alfonso (Così fan tutte, Mozart), König Heinrich (Lohengrin, Wagner), Daland (The Flying Dutchman, Wagner), Banco (Macbeth, Verdi), Sparafucile (Rigoletto, Verdi), Pagano (I Lombardi alla Prima Crociata, Verdi), Don Basilio (Il Barbiere di Siviglia, Rossini), Water-gnome (Rusalka, Dvořák), Comte des Grieux (Manon, Massenet), Colline (La Bohème, Puccini), Alidoro (La Cenerentola, Rossini) and Lorenzo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi, Bellini). He also performed the bass soloist parts in concert-works such as Verdi’s Requiem, Mozart’s Requiem, Bach’s St John Passion, Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, Handel’s Messiah, Bach’s Mass in B minor, Mozart’s Great Mass in C minor, Haydn’s The Seven Last Words of Our Saviour on the Cross, Haydn’s Stabat Mater, Shostakovich’s Symphony No.14, and Tippett’s A Child of Our Time.
Last season (2018/2019) Petros Magoulas appeared as Comte des Grieux (Manon, Massenet), Jacopo Fiesco (a Royal Opera House production of Simon Boccanegra, Verdi), Old Convict (Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk, Shostakovich), and in the ballet production of The Wedding (Igor Stravinsky) at the Greek National Opera. He also appeared as Colline (La Bohème, Puccini) in Thessaloniki Concert Hall, as Melisso (Alcina, Händel) in Athens Epidaurus Festival with Armonia Atenea under George Petrou (Athens Herodeon), in Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 with the Thessaloniki State Orchestra (Thessaloniki Concert Hall), in Hatzidakis’ The Damned Snake (Milan, Castello Sforzesco), and in Bruckner’s Mass No.3 with the Athens State Orchestra (Athens Megaron).
This season (2019/2020) Petros Magoulas makes his debut at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, singing Commendatore. The Don Giovanni ROH production is going to be played in more than 1500 cinemas all over the world. He is also appearing at the Greek National Opera with two important world premieres of two operas of the contemporary composers Giorgos Kouroupos and Yiorgos Vassilandonakis (look at the EVENTS section). Further engagements include Handel’s opera Publio Cornelio Scipione at the Goettingen Handel Festival (Germany), Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Beethoven’s Missa Solemnis, both at the Athens Megaron with the Athens State Orchestra.
Petros Magoulas is a regular collaborator of the conductor George Petrou and his orchestra Armonia Atenaea. His recordings include all main bass roles in the releases of Handel’s operas Oreste, Arianna in Creta, Tamerlano, Giulio Cesare, Alessandro Severo (MDG), and also Arminio (DECCA).
